John Lothrop Motley (1814 - May 29, 1877) was an American statesman and historian. A Republican from Massachusetts, Motley served as U.S. Ambassador to Austria from 1861 to 1867, and then as U.S. Ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1869 to 1870. He is better known, however for his two great historical works - The Rise of the Dutch Republic (1856) and History of the United Netherlands (1860-1868) - which told the story of the Dutch rebellion against the Spanish from 1566 to 1609. Motley's historical work is noted for its vigorous narrative style and for its strongly protestant, anti-Spanish tone.de:John Lothrop Motley
