Image talk:Europeanunion 25.png

This map is erroneous: only the Southern part of Cyprus joined the European Union, the Northern part, which is under Turkish rule, did not. It should be corrected.

You could use the modification in its Hungarian version: hu:Kép:Europaiunio.png

Not true. The Cyprus wiki says:

"Negotiations have been ongoing for years to reunify the island, but have not as yet seen substantial success. A United Nations plan, announced on March 31, 2004 following talks in Switzerland, was put to both sides in separate referenda on April 24. It was favoured by the Turkish side by a majority of 2 to 1, but was rejected by the Greek side by a 3 to 1 margin. As a result, while officially the whole of Cyprus entered the European Union on May 1, 2004, the de facto EU border runs along the Green Line, dividing the country between the Greek and Turkish parts. EU law is currently not applied in the Turkish controlled north. See: Annan Plan, 2004 referendum."

So, Cyprus did join as a whole, but EU law does not apply on the northen part of the island. Hencefore, current version is correct.

I am sorry, your conclusion only reflects the de jure situation, though the text you quoted mentions the "de facto" situation as well. We can say that both versions are correct, one de facto, the other de jure. Some people are more interested in one, some people the other. Both are important historically. Neither can be declared incorrect in this controversial situation, we just have to make difference between them. --Adam78

'Slovak Republic' is not necessary; 'Slovakia' is fine. 'Czech Republic', if changed to 'Czechia', will be reverted by Wik, but at the moment it is barely visible (very faint), so at least can we use a bolder font for it? -- Kaihsu 09:32, 2004 May 5 (UTC)

Shetland should be in dark blue Andy G 18:32, 5 May 2004 (UTC)

<nitpick>I think the No Date Set text should be changed to something more neutral, it suggest that those countries will join eventually which they may or may not do, </nitpick> --Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 10:02, 2004 May 9 (UTC)

V2.0 uploaded. Shetland coloured in blue. No date set--> candidate countries. Slovak republic->Slovakia. Attempted to retype country names so that they are more readable.

Added a new table (Réunion, Canary Islands...).

By request rivers have been removed. Your comments will be apreciated :-) thewikipedian 9 May 2004. Happy Europe day!!

Azores and Madeira are missing from top left while Canary Islands need shading (all top right table) --Henrygb 20:51, 9 May 2004 (UTC)

In order to avoid the impression, that Guadeloupe, Reunion and Martinique are close to each other (in terms of geography), I'd suggest, that those islands are separated in the box by a bar. Gugganij 23:43, 9 May 2004 (UTC)

V 2.1. Added the Azores and Madeira (PT). Separated Guadeloupe, Martinique and Réunion. Canary islands now coloured in blue with white sea. 11 May 13:18 UTC+1 thewikipedian

Major new map version

New EU Map

New EU Map

I produced this new map by editing the Europe map and the existing EU map (for the further east bit). I hope that this is clearer - the paler background on the EU countries is done to show up the text more. Unfortunately this is slightly at the expense of a clear difference between Romania/Bulgaria and Turkey, but it's distinguishable. I added the names of the EU neighbours. Yes the font is VERY small, but as they're not as relevant to the topic, it's no matter. They are recognisable. (I don't relish the prospect of trying to fit all those Balkan countries in the EU countries font!!!)

Please let me know your opinions. Unlike this map, I have one on my PC at 300% of the size, with no anti-aliasing, which makes changing things easier.

I hope those who have put such effort into this map are not annoyed. I did spend about 2.5 hours myself doing this new version!!!

I think it's really good (especially the colour scheme, but then I'm rather partial to blue ;-)). Well done!
One little thing - the shrinking has somewhat mangled the Cypriot coast - is there any way you can avoid this?
Thanks,

Ah... yes... the Cypriot coast. It's actually from a seperate image! I used a map 3 times the size (the Europe map) and reduced it down. Then for the extra eastern bit I had to glue on the piece from the old map. I'll try and edit it better. I may scale it up 300%, redraw over it on a seperate layer, with ref to real cyprus map, and reduce down again. I'll have a look-see as to how much precision I can get from the old map first (by cleaning it up).

Cyprus seems to be worse in the old map. Nevertheless, I'll look at improving it on the new image. Zoney 11:01, 21 May 2004 (UTC)
Much better then the old one, be bold an update the page with it. --Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 10:39, 2004 May 21 (UTC)
I already changed article after I uploaded the image, I just didn't overwrite this one! :o) Zoney 11:01, 21 May 2004 (UTC)
