Hume is a town located in Allegany County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,987.

History
Roger Mills, the first settler, arrived in 1808. The Town of Hume was incorporated in 1822 and was formed from the Town of Pike in Wyoming County, New York.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 99.3 km² (38.3 mi²). 98.3 km² (37.9 mi²) of it is land and 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.07% water.
The Genesee River flows through the eastern part of the town. The north town line is the border of Wyoming County.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,987 people, 766 households, and 542 families residing in the town. The population density is 20.2/km² (52.4/mi²). There are 886 housing units at an average density of 9.0/km² (23.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 98.79% White, 0.15% African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.55% from two or more races. 0.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 766 households out of which 34.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.7% are married couples living together, 10.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% are non-families. 24.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.59 and the average family size is 3.06.
In the town the population is spread out with 29.0% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 23.8% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 97.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.6 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $32,128, and the median income for a family is $37,366. Males have a median income of $27,976 versus $19,479 for females. The per capita income for the town is $14,907. 17.2% of the population and 12.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 24.0% of those under the age of 18 and 6.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

- Fillmore -- The hamlet of Fillmore is located at the junction of Routes 19 and 19A on the left bank of the Genesee River.
- Hume -- The hamlet of Hume (also called Hume Village and formerly called Cold Creek) is northwest of Fillmore on Route 19.
- Mills Mills -- A location north of Fillmore named after early settlers of the Mills family.
- Rossburg -- A hamlet northeast of Fillmore on Route 19A.
- Wiscoy -- A hamlet north of Fillmore on Route 19 is named after Wiscoy Creek.
