Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,110 km² (815 mi²). 2,089 km² (807 mi²) of it is land and 20 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.97% water.

There are 6,237 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (8/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 72.77% White, 4.48% Black or African American, 16.18% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.98% from other races, and 5.36% from two or more races. 2.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 5,319 households out of which 28.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.50% are married couples living together, 11.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.90% are non-families. 28.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 2.96.
