Horn Lake is a city located in DeSoto County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 14,099.
Geography
Horn Lake is located at 34°57'31" North, 90°2'35" West (34.958644, -90.042924)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 18.8 km² (7.2 mi²). 18.8 km² (7.2 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 14,099 people, 4,934 households, and 3,754 families residing in the city. The population density is 751.9/km² (1,947.5/mi²). There are 5,153 housing units at an average density of 274.8/km² (711.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 83.01% White, 12.26% African American, 0.52% Native American, 0.89% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.20% from other races, and 1.07% from two or more races. 4.28% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 4,934 households out of which 47.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.1% are married couples living together, 15.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 23.9% are non-families. 18.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.86 and the average family size is 3.22.
In the city the population is spread out with 32.6% under the age of 18, 10.1% from 18 to 24, 36.5% from 25 to 44, 16.1% from 45 to 64, and 4.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 29 years. For every 100 females there are 97.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.4 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $40,396, and the median income for a family is $43,495. Males have a median income of $32,595 versus $25,045 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,183. 6.7% of the population and 6.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.6% of those under the age of 18 and 17.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
During 2001, Horn Lake annexed several square miles and about 6,000 people to the west of the city's former borders.
