Hokkaido University (北海道大学; Hokkaido Daigaku, or 北大;Hokudai), located in Sapporo, Hokkaido, is one of the leading national universities of Japan.
The university was founded as Hokkaido Imperial University (北海道帝國大学; Hokkaido Teikoku Daigaku) on April 1, 1918, in the Meiji Era. It was one of nine imperial universities.
Since the founding of Hokkaido University, Sapporo Agricultural College (札幌農学校;Sapporo Nou Gakkō) has been part of the University.
Hokkaido University has since 2004 been incorporated as a national university corporation under a new law which applies to all national universities.
