Highland Park, Los Angeles, California
|
Highland Park is a neighborhood of northeast Los Angeles. One of the oldest neighborhoods in Los Angeles, Highland Park is located along the Arroyo Seco just off the Pasadena Freeway between downtown Los Angeles on the southwest, Eagle Rock on the north, Pasadena on the northeast, South Pasadena on the east, and Monterey Hills to the southeast. Due to the rising real estate prices in Southern California and its close proximity to fashionable neighborhoods and to central Los Angeles, Highland Park is showing early signs of gentrification.
The major street that runs through Highland Park is Figueroa Street (which runs roughly southwest to northeast through Highland Park), which is intersected along its length by a series of numbered Avenues (i.e. Avenue 41, 42, 43, 45, etc.) which run roughly from north to south, but many cross at other angles. The infamous Avenues Gang (Avenue 43rd) has its origin in these streets.
Highland Park's geography is characterized by its surrounding hills, which make it something of a scenic area. There are many parks in the area, including Arroyo Seco Park and Ernest E. Debs Regional Park. The Southwest Museum (a collection of Native American artifacts) is located in Mount Washington, another district that is immediately adjacent.
