Henderson Field
|
Several airports have been named Henderson Field, most famously on Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands, where control of the airstrip was the focus of months of fighting in the Battle of Guadalcanal during World War II. It was renamed to Honiara International Airport in 2003, but the name lives on in "Henderson Field Airports" of Midway Atoll and Wallace, North Carolina.
Henderson Field was named for Loften R. Henderson, a squadron commander lost in the Battle of Midway.
