Hazret Medzhidovich Sovmen (Russian: Хазрет Меджидович Совмен) (born May 1, 1937) is the President of the Republic of Adygeya in the Russian Federation. He is the second president of the republic, having succeeded Aslan Dzharimov on the post. Sovmen is a university professor from Maykop. Before he became President, Sovmen was a successful businessman (with links to Russian entrepreneurs in Siberia), having started off as a bulldozer driver in a gold mine in Chukotka.
He was elected to the post of President on January 13, 2002, by direct suffrage in the Republic. When elected to the post, he was faced with the challenges of leading one of Russia's poorest republics, officially declared bankrupt by the Government in Moscow. Currently, Sovmen is involved in political intrigues involving The Slavic Union, Adygeya's principal opposition party. However, Russian president Vladimir Putin supports Sovmen and believes his skills can save the republic from crisis. In 1997, the President of Russia awarded him with a For the Merits to Motherland award of the 3rd class.
He is a member of the United Russia party.
