Hay Township is a township in Gladwin County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 1,402.
Communities
- White Star is an unincorporated community in the township at the junction of Michigan State Highway 61 and Michigan State Highway 30 on the west side of the Tittawabassee River at Template:Coor dms. The elevation is 727 feet above sea level.
- Winegars is an unincorporated community in the township on Michigan State Highway 30 at Template:Coor dms. The elevation is 731 feet above sea level.
- Wooden Shoe Village is an unincorporated community in the township on M-61 on the east side of the Tittawabassee at Template:Coor dms.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 58.7 km² (22.7 mi²). 57.6 km² (22.2 mi²) of it is land and 1.2 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.98% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,402 people, 601 households, and 403 families residing in the township. The population density is 24.3/km² (63.0/mi²). There are 1,321 housing units at an average density of 22.9/km² (59.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 97.57% White, 0.00% African American, 1.21% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 1.00% from two or more races. 1.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 601 households out of which 23.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.4% are married couples living together, 7.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.8% are non-families. 26.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.79.
In the township the population is spread out with 21.8% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 23.5% from 25 to 44, 29.3% from 45 to 64, and 20.1% who are 65 years of age or older.
