Plot
Jimmy Stewart plays Elwood P. Dowd, a middle aged drunk whose best friend is a six-foot and three and a half inches tall invisible rabbit named Harvey. Harvey is actually a pooka, a mischievous magical creature. Elwood has been driving his sister and niece wild by introducing everyone he meets to his pal Harvey. His sister, Veta Louise Simmons (Hull), then tries to have Elwood committed to Chumley's Rest sanatorium, but they let Elwood out and lock her up. After sorting out the mistake, Dr. Chumley (Kellaway) goes after Elwood himself.
The film, directed by Henry Koster, used a screenplay by Mary Chase, working with Oscar Brodney, based on her Pulitzer Prize winning Broadway play of the same name, which was first produced on November 1, 1944.
