Hart's Location, New Hampshire
|
Hart's Location is an town in Carroll County, New Hampshire. As of the 2000 census, the location had a total population of 37. It started out as a location until it's incorporation in 2001. In New Hampshire, locations, grants, townships (which are different from towns), and purchases are unincorporated portions of a county which are not part on any town and have limited self-government (if any, as many are uninhabited). Villages are census divisions of towns or cities, but have no separate corporate existence from the municipality they are located in. Hart's Location receives services from the nearby town of Bartlett, NH, but otherwise has its own government, selectmen, and even a post office.
Hart's Location is, along with Dixville Notch, one of two New Hampshire communities where votes the first votes are cast in the Democratic and Republican New Hampshire primaries, the first presidential primaries in the United States during each presidential election year. The Hart's Location midnight voting tradition, which began in 1948, actually predates the more widely-known Dixville Notch practice; however, Dixville Notch generally receives greater publicity because Hart's Location discontinued the practice in the 1960s, only to reinstate it in 1996.

Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the location has a total area of 48.2 km² (18.6 mi²). 48.2 km² (18.6 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.
Its shape is strikingly unusual: about 11 miles long and 1.5 miles wide, with crooked boundaries that echo the paths of the upper Saco River and U. S. Route 302 (near the centerline of Hart's), pinched from both sides between steep mountains and in some areas sheer cliffs above. This anomaly is heightened on maps that show county lines: Coos County lies immediately to the east, and Grafton County to the west, but Hart's Location is part of Carroll County though barely connected to it, visually suggesting the county represents the outline of a teapot, with Hart's Location playing the role of the teapot's narrow, crooked spout.
