Greenport is a village located in Suffolk County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 2,048.
The Village of Greenport is located in the Town of Southold and is the only incorporated village in the town.
Greenport (http://www.Greenport.cc) is a major business center of the area, developing from its early roots as a shipping center and a port, which included fishing, trade, and whaling. Greenport's harbor enjoyed its success because its harbor never froze-over. Currently it has approximately a population of 3,000.

History
The village was previously called Winter Harbor, Stirling, and Green Hill and was incorporated in 1838. Greenport (http://www.Greenport.cc) was once a whaling and ship building village, and, since 1844, has been the eastern terminal station on the north fork for the Long Island Rail Road.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 3.1 km² (1.2 mi²). 2.5 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 20.66% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,048 people, 776 households, and 446 families residing in the village. The population density is 823.7/km² (2,142.7/mi²). There are 1,075 housing units at an average density of 432.4/km² (1,124.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 76.17% White, 14.26% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.39% Asian, 0.54% Pacific Islander, 4.74% from other races, and 3.91% from two or more races. 17.24% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 776 households out of which 28.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.1% are married couples living together, 16.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 42.5% are non-families. 34.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.42 and the average family size is 3.10.
In the village the population is spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 23.7% from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 22.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.3 males.
The median income for a household in the village is $31,675, and the median income for a family is $36,333. Males have a median income of $36,848 versus $22,165 for females. The per capita income for the village is $17,595. 19.7% of the population and 21.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 33.7% of those under the age of 18 and 11.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
