Grande Prairie (Template:Coor dm MST) is the chief city of the province of Alberta's northwest section. It is located on the southern edge of the Peace River Country and is 456 km northwest of Edmonton. Grande Prairie is growing rapidly and in 2003, its population was 40,226. It is currently Alberta's 7th largest city. Grande Prairie also serves as the economic and transportation hub for a trading area of nearly 250,000 people. The city is home to several National Head Offices.
The primary post-secondary educational institution is Grande Prairie Regional College (GPRC) which offers degrees in a few programs. Cultural venues include the Crystal Centre (a concert hall), the Grande Prairie Museum, the Prairie Art Gallery, and the Second Street Theatre. The city boasts a number of parks and golf courses including the large Muskoseepi Park in the Bear Creek Valley.
Major industries include oil and gas, agriculture, forestry, services, and technology.
The city operates a small transit system with busus. Grande Prairie Regional Airport serves the region (with regular flights to Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, and smaller cities). Highway 43 is the primary highway into the city.
