Government Radio Network (Australia)
|
The Government Radio Network (or GRN) is a system of interconnected repeater stations, mobile (vehicle mounted), portable and static radio transceivers used within Australia for secure communications.
This system is used by almost all Australian Emergency Services (Police, Fire, Ambulance) along with some private companies.
Frequencies are allocated dynamically to each "caller group" (group of connected radios) as required and are only activated in areas ("cells") which contain radios belonging to that "caller group".
The frequencies used are outside of the Citizen's band, and as such are relatively secure, although they can be intercepted by scanners, etc.
Also available is the digital GRN network (Used by the SA Police force) which is encrypted and therefore cannot be monitored by a scanner. The Digital GRN network hasn't had the problems the analogue netowrk has with poor reception, etc.
The SA Country Fire Service use GRN radios.
