Gorham is a town located in Coos County, New Hampshire. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,895. Incorporated in 1836, Gorham is located in the White Mountains, and its main source of outside income comes from tourism.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 83.7 km² (32.3 mi²). 82.6 km² (31.9 mi²) of it is land and 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.27% water.
Demographics
This census data for the town includes the data for the Gorham (CDP), New Hampshire which covers only the central district. As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,895 people, 1,293 households, and 801 families residing in the town. The population density is 35.0/km² (90.7/mi²). There are 1,482 housing units at an average density of 17.9/km² (46.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.34% White, 0.07% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 1.21% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 1.00% from two or more races. 0.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,293 households out of which 26.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.7% are married couples living together, 6.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.0% are non-families. 33.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.24 and the average family size is 2.84.
In the town the population is spread out with 22.1% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 27.9% from 25 to 44, 24.5% from 45 to 64, and 19.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.8 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $32,250, and the median income for a family is $41,008. Males have a median income of $34,659 versus $20,278 for females.
