Golden Hill Paugussett Indian Nation
|
The Golden Hill Paugussets are a group of Native Americans living in Trumbull, Connecticut. They are a source of a great deal of controversy in the area, due to their continual and unsuccessful quest to get federal recognition, which is generally denied due to a claimed failure on their part to accurately show lineage to the original Golden Hill Paugussett nation. This prohibits them from activities such as opening a casino.
The tribe's failure to get federal recognition also makes it difficult for them to pursue their claims to much of the land that was historically part of the Paugusset nation. They have claimed legal rights to hundreds of square miles of land running from Orange/Woodbridge in New Haven County though Fairfield County to Greenwich and extending North into Eastern Litchfield County up to the [[CT MA Border| Massachusetts border]].
