Gloria al Bravo Pueblo
|
Gloria al Bravo Pueblo (Glory to the Brave People) was adopted as Venezuela's national anthem by President Antonio Guzmán Blanco on May 25, 1881. The lyrics were composed by the medician and journalist Vicente Salias in 1810. The music was later added by musician Juan José Landaeta. It is said that the melody was known since 1840 as La Marsellesa Venezolana (Venezuelan Marseillaise). However, recent investigations have suggested that the real author of the anthem is Andrés Bello, and the music made by Lino Gallardo, but this theory hasn't been totally verified so far.
Lyrics in the Castilian Language
CHORUS:
Gloria al bravo pueblo
que el yugo lanzó
la ley respetando
la virtud y honor.
(repeat chorus)
¡Abajo cadenas!
(repeat)
gritaba el Señor
(repeat)
y el pobre en su choza
libertad pidió
A este santo nombre
(repeat)
tembló de pavor
el vil egoísmo
que otra vez triunfó.
(repeat previous two lines)
CHORUS
Gritemos con brío:
(repeat)
¡Muera la opresión!
(repeat)
Compatriotas fieles,
la fuerza es la unión;
y desde el Empíreo
(repeat)
el Supremo Autor,
un sublime aliento
al pueblo infundió.
(repeat previous two lines)
CHORUS
Unida con lazos
(repeat)
que el cielo formó
(repeat)
la América toda
existe en nación.
Y si el despotismo
(repeat)
levanta la voz
seguid el ejemplo
que Caracas dio.
(repeat previous two lines)
CHORUS
