Glenorchy, Tasmania, Australia is one of the three city councils that make up the greater Hobart area. Its land was originally used for agriculture (particularly orchards) but is now a largely suburban, mainly working class area.
It was proclaimed a city in 1964. Major commercial areas include Moonah, Glenorchy and Claremont. Glenorchy has a major indoor shopping centre, Northgate Shopping Centre.
The City of Glenorchy area spans along the Derwent River, from just north of the Queens Domain in the south, to the Bridgewater Causeway in the north, and extending west as far as the foothills of Mount Wellington. However, the word Glenorchy is usually said in reference to the suburb, which includes only a small portion of this area.
