Gilead Township is a township located in south central Branch County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 753.
There are no incorporated municipalities within the primarily agricultural township. The only concentrated settlements are in two unincorporated communities:
- East Gilead is just north of the Indiana state border at Template:Coor dms. The FIPS place code is 23960. The elevation is 981 feet above sea level.
- Gilead is on the east side of Lake Gilead at Template:Coor dms. The FIPS place code is 32100.
Geography
The township is drained mostly by the Prairie River and several tributary creeks. A small portion of the southwest corner drains into the Fawn River.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 55.5 km² (21.4 mi²). 54.6 km² (21.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.9 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.63% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 753 people, 256 households, and 186 families residing in the township. The population density is 13.8/km² (35.7/mi²). There are 368 housing units at an average density of 6.7/km² (17.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 88.58% White, 0.00% African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 10.23% from other races, and 0.80% from two or more races. 13.01% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 256 households out of which 28.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.2% are married couples living together, 8.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.3% are non-families. 22.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.67 and the average family size is 3.08.
In the township the population is spread out with 22.6% under the age of 18, 10.0% from 18 to 24, 32.4% from 25 to 44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 13.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 131.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 127.7 males.
The median income for a household in the township is $37,000, and the median income for a family is $43,000. Males have a median income of $34,063 versus $26,974 for females. The per capita income for the township is $17,256. 18.2% of the population and 5.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.0% of those under the age of 18 and 14.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
