Introduction

The Genbukan Ninpo Bugei world federation was founded in 1984 by grandmaster Shoto Tanemura, a descendant of an old and respected samurai family with family roots tracing back to the imperial family of Japan. After studying for over 30 years under his father, uncle and many famous and respected masters and grandmasters like Fukumoto sensei, Akimoto sensei, Kimura sensei, Sato sensei, Takamatsu Toshitsugu sensei and others, he decided to go his own way and teach these traditional Japanese martial arts all over the world.

He started out with a handful of students in his dojo in Matsubushi from where he runs the world federation and teaches in the honbu dojo. On this moment the Genbukan World Ninpo Bugei Federation has hundreds of dojos all over the world.

Structure

The Genbukan Ninpo Bugei is divided in 36 categories called the "Ninpo Sanjurokkei" which every serious student of the ninpo bugei should try to master, starting of with taijutsu, bojutsu and bikenjutsu. These being the 3 pillars of ninpo. Later this will be followed by other sections like bisento, naginata, yari, shuriken, etc. But the most important part of all is the Seishin teki kyoyo, spiritual refinement.

The ninpo bugei taijutsu is made up of different sub-arts like koppojutsu, kosshijutsu, dakentaijutsu, jutaijutsu, etc. Each of them has its own speciality. For example; the dakentaijutsu specializes in techniques using blocks, punches, kicks, throws, locks, etc. in order to completely destroy the enemy where as kosshijutsu mainly uses fingertip techniques to cause damage to nerve points.

Koppojutsu on the other hand uses specialized blocks, pinches and kicks to attack the bones and joints. These specialized attacks are intended to dislocate or break. One of the "softest" parts of the ninpo taijutsu is jutaijutsu, having a great resemblance with jujutsu. The jutaijutsu throws, locks and chokes the opponent but leaving him with his life, giving him an opportunity to surrender.
