Fruita is a city located in Mesa County, Colorado. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,478.

Fruita is located at 39°9'24" North, 108°43'28" West (39.156594, -108.724554)Template:GR.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.6 km² (6.0 mi²). 15.4 km² (5.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.50% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 6,478 people, 2,447 households, and 1,734 families residing in the city. The population density is 421.1/km² (1,091.0/mi²). There are 2,610 housing units at an average density of 169.7/km² (439.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 90.65% White, 0.37% African American, 1.16% Native American, 0.29% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 5.45% from other races, and 2.05% from two or more races. 11.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,447 households out of which 36.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.6% are married couples living together, 12.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.1% are non-families. 24.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.04.
In the city the population is spread out with 27.9% under the age of 18, 7.7% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 89.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.4 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $32,929, and the median income for a family is $38,487. Males have a median income of $31,372 versus $20,752 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,024. 12.9% of the population and 8.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 19.2% of those under the age of 18 and 16.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
Mike The Headless Chicken
Fruita is known for Mike the Headless Chicken, a rooster who lived for 18 months after his head was cut off. A festival in his honor is held regularly in Fruita. [See also Lloyd Olson - the remover of Mike's neck]
