Franklin, Tennessee

Franklin is a city located in Williamson County, Tennessee, USA. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 41,842. It is the county seat of Williamson CountyTemplate:GR. It is the home of retired NASCAR driver Darrell Waltrip, who also owns a car dealership there.

Franklin is located at 35°55'45" North, 86°51'27" West (35.929074, -86.857402)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 78.0 km² (30.1 mi²). 77.8 km² (30.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.27% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 41,842 people, 16,128 households, and 11,225 families residing in the city. The population density is 538.0/km² (1,393.3/mi²). There are 17,296 housing units at an average density of 222.4/km² (575.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 84.53% White, 10.35% African American, 0.24% Native American, 1.61% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 2.17% from other races, and 1.06% from two or more races. 4.84% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 16,128 households out of which 38.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.2% are married couples living together, 10.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.4% are non-families. 25.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.55 and the average family size is 3.09.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.9% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 38.1% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 7.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 93.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $56,431, and the median income for a family is $69,431. Males have a median income of $50,226 versus $31,531 for females. The per capita income for the city is $27,276. 6.7% of the population and 5.1% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 8.0% of those under the age of 18 and 12.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The 2004 Special Census lists the city's population at just over 46,000 making it the 10th largest city in the state and the fastest growing.
