Franklin is a city located in Norfolk County, Massachusetts. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 29,560.

History

Franklin was first settled in 1660 and was officially incorporated in 1778.

The Franklin Public Library is America's first lending library. In 1778, when the town was incorporated the designated name Exeter, was changed to Franklin in honor of Dr. Benjamin Franklin. When asked to donate a bell, Franklin responded with an offer of books for the town's residents, acknowledging that 'sense' was preferable to 'sound'. The original Franklin collection is still housed in a bookcase in the library.

Geography

Franklin is located at 42°5'21" North, 71°24'25" West (42.089104, -71.406909)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 70.0 km² (27.0 mi²). 69.3 km² (26.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.00% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 29,560 people, 10,152 households, and 7,877 families residing in the city. The population density is 426.8/km² (1,105.4/mi²). There are 10,327 housing units at an average density of 149.1/km² (386.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 95.95% White, 1.08% African American, 0.15% Native American, 1.66% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. 1.08% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 10,152 households out of which 44.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.4% are married couples living together, 8.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.4% are non-families. 18.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.85 and the average family size is 3.29.

In the city the population is spread out with 30.3% under the age of 18, 6.5% from 18 to 24, 35.1% from 25 to 44, 19.9% from 45 to 64, and 8.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $71,174, and the median income for a family is $81,826. Males have a median income of $58,888 versus $36,557 for females. The per capita income for the city is $27,849. 2.8% of the population and 2.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.8% of those under the age of 18 and 5.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
