This flag was adopted by the Tadzhik SSR on March 20, 1953.
Prior to this, the flag was red with the gold hammer and sickle in the top-left corner, above the gold Cyrillic characters РСС Точикистон (RSS Tochikiston) and Таджикская РСС (Tadzhikskaja SSR) in a sans-serif font.
Between 1937 and the adoption of the above flag in the 1940s, the flag was the same, but the first line of characters were in Latin characters (RSS Toҫikiston).
Between July 4, 1935 and 1937, the flag was the same, but without the hammer and sickle.
Between February 25, 1931 and July 1935, the flag was the same, but without the Cyrillic characters.
The first flag of the Tadzhik Soviet Socialist Republic was adopted on February 23, 1929, and was red with the coat of arms in the top-left corner.
