The station serves an area of Washington crowded with federal buildings and is located in the courtyard of one of the buildings, on 12th Street between Pennsylvania and Constitution Avenues, Northwest. The station gets its name from the triangle formed by 15th Street, Constitution Avenue, and Pennsylvania Avenue, which includes such federal agencies as the Justice Department, Department of Commerce, the IRS and the EPA. Service began on July 1, 1977.
