Footnotes
1 Although Rockall is located within the European continental shelf and hence can be considered a European island, its political status is uncertain, as it is claimed by several countries. If Rockall is not considered part of the European Union the westernmost point is Tearaght Island, Ireland.
2 Although the whole of Cyprus became part of the European Union on 1 May 2004, EU legislation only applies to the Republic of Cyprus, the Greek southern part of the island. EU legislation is suspended in the internationally unrecognised Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Northern Cyprus is therefore de facto not part of the EU, but if it is included the easternmost point is Rizokarpason, Cyprus.
3 Réunion and Guadeloupe are French départements d'outre-mer, and as such are fully part of France and the EU.
