Enchanted River
|
The Enchanted River in Mirkwood is a river from J.R.R. Tolkien's fictional universe of Middle-earth. It was a dark running river, which anyone who came into contact with would fall into a deep sleep. It began in the Mountains of Mirkwood, and met the Forest River near Thranduil's Caverns.
This river was encountered by the expedition of Thorin Oakenshield during his quest to regain the Lonely Mountain as a Dwarf stronghold.
He and his Dwarves, plus Bilbo Baggins, were journeying through Mirkwood in order to get to The Lonely Mountain. Bombur, the heaviest (and fattest) of the dwarves came into contact with this river, and promptly fell asleep.
The expedition only successfully crossed this river after Bilbo Baggins (the person with the keenest eye sight) spotted a boat on the opposite bank of the river.
The expedition used this boat to ferry themselves across, and continue their journey.
In the First Age, Enchanted River was a name for the Esgalduin.
