Emmaus, Pennsylvania

Emmaus is a borough located in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 11,313. Emmaus is a southern suburb of Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Emmaus is the global headquarters of Rodale Press, one of the world's leading publishers of health-related books and magazines, and Buckeye Pipe Line, a United States petroleum distributor.

Geography

Emmaus is located at 40°32'13" North, 75°29'45" West (40.536997, -75.495776)Template:GR. According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 7.5 km² (2.9 mi²). 7.5 km² (2.9 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 11,313 people, 4,985 households, and 3,155 families residing in the borough. The population density is 1,511.4/km² (3,918.8/mi²). There are 5,186 housing units at an average density of 692.8/km² (1,796.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the borough is 95.89% White, 0.70% African American, 0.06% Native American, 1.81% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.88% from other races, and 0.63% from two or more races. 1.51% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 4,985 households out of which 26.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.9% are married couples living together, 9.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% are non-families. 31.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.26 and the average family size is 2.85.

In the borough the population is spread out with 21.2% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 31.0% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 19.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 91.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.8 males.

The median income for a household in the borough is $44,181, and the median income for a family is $54,120. Males have a median income of $38,659 versus $25,331 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $23,245. 3.5% of the population and 2.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 1.2% of those under the age of 18 and 7.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

History

Emmaus was founded in 1730 as a Moravian community. The original land on which the town was built was donated for this purpose by Sebastian Heinrich Knauss. Moravian immigrants of German and Czech origin were instrumental in the establishment of the town, which was one of the three leading Moravian communities in the northeast United States at the time of its founding.
