Elbow (band)

Elbow are an atmospheric rock band from Bury in North West England. In 1990, the band met at College to form the Funk-based outfit, 'Soft'. However, it was not until 1997 that the band were offered a record deal by Island Records. However, after Island Records was overtaken by Universal, the band were dropped. The band were on the verge of splitting up when they changed their name to, 'Elbow', a reference to a Peter Gabriel song. Shortly afterwards, the band were accepted by an independent Manchester label called Uglyman Records, who produced the Noisebox EP and the Newborn EP. In 2000, V2 records accepted the band and released the first album, 'Asleep In the Back'. In 2001 the band were nominated for the Mercury Music Prize, but lost to PJ Harvey. In 2002, the band were nominated for a Brit award for Best British Newcomer. In 2003, V2 released the second album, 'Cast Of Thousands', a reference to the crowd at Glastonbury 2002 which famously sang, "We still believe in love - So F*ck you", Which was later released on the track , 'Grace Under Pressure'. The band are currently working on their third album, 'Leaders Of The Free World', to be released on September 5, 2005.
