Eksjö is a Municipality in Jönköping County, in southern Sweden. The municipality covers an area of 801.6 km². Of the total population of 16868, 8302 are male, and 8566 are female. The population density of the community is 21 inhabitants per km².
The city of Eksjö most likely appeared sometime in the beginning of the 15th century, since its first mentioned in 1406. Today the city count a population of 10,110 souls (1996). The city emerged as a centre for the oxen trades but never really prospered and remained a small town until a heath outside the town became the point of essembly for the Smalandia Regiment (Smålands Regemente). The city continued to be in the center of military establishments, with the coming of the engineering batallion and the Husars of Smalandia, in southern Sweden, hence there's been no large industrial establishments.
