The municipality contains two UNESCO World Heritage locations. One is Birka, an old Viking village, and the other is Drottningholm, a castle with its surroundings, carrying a strong heritage from the Swedish 18th century. Birka is situated to the west, on a small island south of Adelsö, while Drottningholm is situated on the eastern island of Lovö.
