Eilean Donan
|
Eilean Donan is a castle in the western Scottish Highlands situated on a small island in Loch Duich about 1/2 a mile from Dornie, and is accessible only by a footbridge. Built in 1220 by Alexander II of Scotland, it is said to have been one of the refuges of Robert the Bruce when he was on the run from English soldiers. It was destroyed by three English frigates in May 1719, a month prior to the Battle of Glen Shiel, since it was being used as a garrison by Spanish troops gathered as part of a Jacobite Rising. Restored in the years between 1912 and 1932 by Lt. Col. John MacRae-Gilstrap, it is now one of the most photographed monuments in Scotland and a popular venue for weddings and film locations. It has appeared in such films as Highlander (1985), Loch Ness (1995) and The World is not Enough (1999).
Eilean Donan is the home of the Clan MacRae.
On a clear day it is possible to see the Isle of Skye from the castle.
In 2001, the island had a population of just one person.
