East Greenbush (town), New York

East Greenbush is a town located in Rensselaer County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 15,560. The name is derived from the Dutch "Green Bosch," referring to the pine woods in the area.
The Town of East Greenbush is located in the western edge of the county. Interstate 90 passes through the town. It is the west end of U.S. Highway 4.

History
The town was established in 1855 upon the division of the original Town of Greenbush. The first settlement was made prior to 1631. The current town was subdivided to form other towns in the county.
Geography
The west town line is partly defined by the Hudson River with Albany County, New York on the opposite shore. The town partly encloses the City of Rensselaer.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 63.1 km² (24.4 mi²). 62.4 km² (24.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.6 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.03% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 15,560 people, 6,084 households, and 4,185 families residing in the town. The population density is 249.4/km² (645.8/mi²). There are 6,281 housing units at an average density of 100.7/km² (260.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.01% White, 2.85% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 1.94% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 0.76% from two or more races. 1.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 6,084 households out of which 32.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.2% are married couples living together, 10.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% are non-families. 25.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.02.
In the town the population is spread out with 24.1% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 90.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.9 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $53,822, and the median income for a family is $62,917. Males have a median income of $43,028 versus $31,777 for females. The per capita income for the town is $25,503. 3.0% of the population and 1.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.8% of those under the age of 18 and 3.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
