EMD SD80MAC
|
The SD80MAC is a 5000 horsepower (3.7 MW) C-C diesel-electric locomotive. It is based on the design of the SD90MAC and looks almost identical to that model, the key difference being the engine power. All 30 units built were delivered to Conrail. When the Conrail split up happened, Norfolk Southern got the lion's share of the SD80MAC's while CSXT got the minority. The SD80MAC can be turned into a 6000 hp (4.5 MW) SD90MAC with a simple engine swap. The SD80MAC's rear end has a shorter sand box, rear number boards, and red marker lights unlike the SD90MAC. The SD80MAC also has recessed red marker lights in the nose, and the lights and number boards are mounted above the cab windows, unlike the SD90MAC. The Chicago and Northwestern railroad ordered 15, along with Canadian Pacific, but the orders were cancelled and/or changed.
