Devic
|
Devič is a female Serb Orthodox Monastery in Drenica, near Srbica, in Serbian province of Kosovo-Metohia. It was first built in 15th century and burnt down during occupation in 1941 at the hands of Albanian quisling forces. It was rebuilt in 1947. It was a target of KLA in 1999 and vandalized with one nun being reportedly raped. Since then it has been under the constant eye of French KFor troops. It was target of new attacks by Albanians in the most serious unrest in Kosovo on March 18, 2004 when the nuns were evacuated for safety reasons by Danish KFor troops. Following that the monastery was pillaged and torched. The Serbian Orthodox Church received confirmation of the monastery's plight the following day from UNMIK.
A Devic is also a mythological, celestial being.
