David Holmes (March 10, 1769–August 20, 1832) was the last governor of the Mississippi Territory and the first governor of the State of Mississippi. From 1797 to 1808 he was Representative from Virginia to the U.S. Congress. He served as territorial Governor from 1809 to 1817 and as state Governor from 1817 to 1820. From 1819 to 1826 he served as U.S. Senator from Mississippi. After his Senate term was completed, he served again briefly as Governor (January-July, 1826). Holmes County, Mississippi is named in honor of him.
