David Cairns (politician)

John David Cairns (born 1966) is a Scottish politician, and member of Parliament for Greenock and Inverclyde - the first person born locally to do so. He is a member of the Labour Party.
From 1991 to 1994 he was a Catholic priest. Prior to his election, The Removal of Clergy Disqualification Bill was passed repealing the House of Commons Clergy Disqualification Act of 1801.
He is a Christian Socialist, was a researcher for Siobhain McDonagh MP, was a Merton borough councillor and entered the House of Commons in 2001.
At the 2005 UK General Election he was re-elected and on May 10th he was appointed Deputy Secretary of State for Scotland.
