"Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover" was a hit song composed and performed by Sophie B. Hawkins in 1992. It is from her album Tongues and Tails.
The song was controversial when it hit the airwaves in the U.S. at the time. The song starts out like a rock love song, where it is assumed that Hawkins is singing about a guy she is madly in love with. However, near the end of the song the lyrics "making love to her with visions clear" reveals that the song is about a woman in love with another woman. Hearing that line makes the song more meaningful when Sophie goes on to sing the chorus lyrics "Free your mind and you won't feel ashamed".
Overall, the song sparked enough controversy that it garnered major airplay in 1992. Even after the success of Hawkins' 1994 song "As I Lay Me Down", "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover" still continues to be played on radios whenever Hawkins has a new album out.
The original music video created for the song was an erotic video that Hawkins described as "creative," but MTV banned it due to its controversial content, forcing a new, more mainstream video to be made. Hawkins is bitter over the event, although she was originally ashamed. A large part of this original video is featured in a documentary on Hawkins, The Cream Will Rise.
