Dalal Mughrabi
|
Dalal Mughrabi (ca. 1959 - March 11, 1978) was a Palestinian terrorist lionized by Palestinian separatists. Her leadership role in a 1978 terrorist attack marked the emergence of women as full-fledged members of terrorist movements.
On the morning of March 11, 1978, Mughrabi and her Fedayeen unit of eleven members (including one other woman) infiltrated the plain near Tel Aviv and hijacked a bus along the coastal highway. The plan was masterminded by Abu Jihad.
She and her unit opened fire at the military vehicles in the vicinity. The Israeli army, headed by Ehud Barak pursued the bus until it was finally stopped near Herzliya. After the ensuing battle in which Mughrabi died, her unit had murdered 36 Israelis and an American nature photographer, Gail Rubin.
The Palestinian Authority named a Hebron girls' school in honor of Mughrabi. Her name also honors summer camps and both police and military courses.
