The Daily Illini is the local school paper of the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, started in 1874. Twenty-thousand copies are produced each weekday during the University's fall and spring semesters and distributed free at over 250 locations throughout Champaign-Urbana. It entertains and informs students with news, sports, comics, opinions, and special sections, and has regularly received awards such as the Columbia Scholastic Press Association Gold and Silver Crowns and the Associated College Press Pacemaker Award. The Daily Illini is owned by the Illini Media Company, a non-profit corporation which has no official ties to the University.
