Cumberland Head, New York

Cumberland Head is a census-designated place and region of the Town of Plattsburgh located in Clinton County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,532.

Cumberland Head is a peninsula in Lake Champlain and includes the communities of Rocky Point and Champlain Park.

A landing for the ferry to Gordon Landing in Vermont is near the south end of Cumberland Head. Cumberland Bay State Park is located at the northern end of the peninsula.

Geography

Cumberland Head is located at 44°42'59" North, 73°24'9" West (44.716345, -73.402603)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 9.6 km² (3.7 mi²). 9.6 km² (3.7 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,532 people, 629 households, and 439 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 159.9/km² (413.9/mi²). There are 793 housing units at an average density of 82.8/km² (214.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 96.08% White, 1.50% African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.59% from other races, and 1.11% from two or more races. 0.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 629 households out of which 29.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.8% are married couples living together, 7.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% are non-families. 23.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 4.7% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 28.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 99.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.1 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $54,659, and the median income for a family is $62,434. Males have a median income of $41,100 versus $27,438 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $29,092. 3.5% of the population and 1.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 21.5% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
