Culture-bound syndrome
|
A culture-bound syndrome is a psychological condition that is confined to certain cultures or cultural groups. While a substantial portion of mental disorders, in the way they are manifested and experienced, are at least partially conditioned by the culture in which they are found, some disorders are more culture-specific than others. These range from striking disorders like amok or latah to syndromes like koro to Western concerns like anorexia nervosa.
