Cowley County (standard abbreviation: CL) is a county located in the state of Kansas. As of 2000, the population is 36,291. The county seat is at Winfield.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,933 km² (1,133 mi²). 2,917 km² (1,126 mi²) of it is land and 16 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.56% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 36,291 people, 14,039 households, and 9,616 families residing in the county. The population density is 12/km² (32/mi²). There are 15,673 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (14/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 90.13% White, 2.70% Black or African American, 1.96% Native American, 1.53% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.36% from other races, and 2.30% from two or more races. 3.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 14,039 households out of which 32.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.20% are married couples living together, 9.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.50% are non-families. 27.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.00% under the age of 18, 9.90% from 18 to 24, 26.00% from 25 to 44, 22.20% from 45 to 64, and 15.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 95.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.20 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $34,406, and the median income for a family is $43,636. Males have a median income of $31,703 versus $21,341 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,509. 12.90% of the population and 9.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 17.00% of those under the age of 18 and 11.20% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
