Cornwall is a town located in Orange County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 12,307.

History
The region was visited by the explorer Henry Hudson in 1609. The Town of Cornwall was founded in 1788.
Geography
Part of the east town line is formed by the Hudson River with Dutchess County, New York on the opposite shore. US Route 9W and the New York State Thruway pass through the town.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 72.9 km² (28.2 mi²). 69.5 km² (26.8 mi²) of it is land and 3.5 km² (1.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.76% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 12,307 people, 4,625 households, and 3,330 families residing in the town. The population density is 177.2/km² (458.8/mi²). There are 4,852 housing units at an average density of 69.8/km² (180.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 94.68% White, 1.32% African American, 0.16% Native American, 1.28% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 1.17% from other races, and 1.34% from two or more races. 5.11% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 4,625 households out of which 36.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.2% are married couples living together, 8.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.0% are non-families. 24.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.18.
In the town the population is spread out with 27.9% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 24.8% from 45 to 64, and 12.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 92.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.7 males.
The median income for a household in the town is $59,537, and the median income for a family is $74,195. Males have a median income of $52,813 versus $37,546 for females. The per capita income for the town is $28,509. 5.0% of the population and 3.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.0% of those under the age of 18 and 3.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
