Concelho
|
A concelho is the primary local administrative unit in Portugal (and other Lusophone countries). It is also called município (municipality). It can also be loosely translated as county. A concelho contains one or more freguesias.
The elected bodies of a concelho are the Câmara Municipal and the Assembleia Municipal.
According to figures from the Instituto Nacional de Estatística, there are 308 concelhos in Portugal.
A concelho is does not necessarily correspond to a city (Portuguese: cidade) or town (Portuguese: vila).
