Comedian (comics)

The Comedian is a central character in the classic comic book series, Watchmen (by Alan Moore, published by DC Comics).
His civilian name is Edward Morgan Blake. He was born in 1924, and the story starts when he is killed in 1985. He did not possess super powers, but his street-wise hand-to-hand fighting skills allowed him to expunge most organized crime from the New York harbour. Blake had long retired when he was murdered. His insignia was a 70’s era yellow happy face button. He has some form of personality disorder where he believed that everything was a joke.
He was a member of the original Minutemen, but left the group after Hooded Justice stopped him from raping Sally Jupiter (Silk Spectre). His original outfit consisted of yellow and purple cloth with a domino mask, but after a brawl went badly, he changed to tougher leather with a metal shoulderpad.
The Comedian first met Ozymandias (Adrian Veidt) in the late 1950s, mistaking him for a colorfully-dressed criminal. They fought, and the Comedian won.
The Comedian made a name for himself as a war hero in the Pacific theater of World War II, and fought in Vietnam. On VVN Day, a pregnant Vietnamese woman slashed his face with a broken bottle, and the Comedian shot her; Doctor Manhattan stood by and did not intervene. After that incident, the Comedian exchanged his domino mask for a full-head "gimp" mask.
It is implied that he murdered Woodward and Bernstein, preventing the Watergate scandal from breaking and allowing Richard Nixon to serve four terms as US President. He was in Dallas, Texas the day John F. Kennedy was shot, acting as a bodyguard for Nixon.
In 1985, the Comedian found a secret island, where a monstrous creature was being engineered. He discovered the plot of Adrian Veidt to put an end to the Cold War and unite humanity, and broke into Moloch the Magnificent's apartment to tell him. Veidt found out, went to Blake's apartment, and threw him through the window.
