Cohocton (town), New York

Cohocton is a town located in Steuben County, New York, United States. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,626.

The Town of Cohocton contains a village, also called Cohocton and is in the northwest part of the county.

History

The town was formed from the Towns of Bath and Dansville in 1812. Some of the town was later used to form new towns in the county.

Geography

The north town line is the border of Livingston County and Ontario County. Interstate 390 passes through the town.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 145.2 km² (56.1 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,626 people, 972 households, and 704 families residing in the town. The population density is 18.1/km² (46.8/mi²). There are 1,144 housing units at an average density of 7.9/km² (20.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.49% White, 0.46% Black or African American, 0.61% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.99% from two or more races. 0.27% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 972 households out of which 38.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% are married couples living together, 9.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.5% are non-families. 21.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.69 and the average family size is 3.10.

In the town the population is spread out with 28.8% under the age of 18, 7.0% from 18 to 24, 29.4% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 12.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 98.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 98.5 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $35,559, and the median income for a family is $39,583. Males have a median income of $28,333 versus $25,208 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,243. 17.6% of the population and 12.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.1% of those under the age of 18 and 9.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The 1890 population was 3,475.

  • North Cohocton -- hamlet in the northeast part of the town on Route 371.
