Coheed and Cambria is an American progressive rock band whose albums form a tetralogy telling the story of two characters, Coheed and Cambria. The lead singer/guitarist, Claudio Sanchez, is also writing a graphic novel series to further illustrate this story. To date, two albums have been released, The Second Stage Turbine Blade (2001) and In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 (2003). These albums make up the second and third parts of the saga of Coheed and Cambria. The fourth section, titled Good Apollo: I'm Burning Star IV: Vol. One From Fear Through The Eyes Of Madness is currently being produced, with a tentative release date of summer 2005. The albums are being released out of sequence; this will be the first of a two-part conclusion to the saga, which will be followed by the story's introduction.

The band comprises four members: Claudio Sanchez (vocals/guitar), Travis Stever (guitar), Michael Todd (bass), and Josh Eppard (drums). The band's original name was Shabutie. Coheed and Cambria was started as a side project by Claudio, and decided to change Shabutie to their current name because he liked it so much better. Shabutie did release an EP that can serve as the first part of the quadrilogy, and until an album is released that fills this void in the sequence, the album will serve as the base of the story.

Coheed and Cambria's music is often compared to that of Rush, partly because of lead singer Sanchez's impressive vocal range, and Yes, partly because of the intracacy and "dueling" style of guitar work. Their technical precision, terse rhythmic phrases and the advanced compostional structures of songs evoke earlier similarly crafted rock. Story elements and melodic themes are cohesively wrought throughout their albums to date. Co&Ca are the most visible arbiters of a new sort of "prog-rock opera" style for the 2000s. Notably, though, the futuristic sci-fi storyline from which all their music is based harkens back to the epic sound and feel of 1970s progressive-rock.

The Coheed and Cambria Story

The story of Coheed and Cambria exists in its entirety, at present, in the mind of frontman Claudio Sanchez. Beyond what he has specifically stated, what is mentioned on the albums, and what is written in the first comic book released, is speculation. Comic books are in the process of being released, each book covering the span of one or two of the band's songs. The first comic book, The Second Stage Turbine Blade, explains the events transpiring during the first two tracks of the band's album of the same name. It is written by Claudio and illustrated by Wes Abbot. The second comic book is slated for a March 2005 release. The first comic will be released for sale in comic book stores in February 2005.
