The Charter Township of Clinton, usually referred to as Clinton Township, is a charter township located in Macomb County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 95,648.
The township is named for the Clinton River, which had been renamed at the first meeting of the Michigan State Legislature in honor of DeWitt Clinton, the popular governor of New York from 1817 to 1823. The river forks into three branches within the township.
Rapper Eminem lived in the township in 2001.
Geography
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 73.1 km² (28.2 mi²). 73.0 km² (28.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.11% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 95,648 people, 40,299 households, and 25,549 families residing in the township. The population density is 1,310.0/km² (3,392.5/mi²). There are 41,803 housing units at an average density of 572.6/km² (1,482.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 91.12% White, 4.66% African American, 0.29% Native American, 1.68% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.41% from other races, and 1.83% from two or more races. 1.74% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 40,299 households out of which 28.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.7% are married couples living together, 10.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.6% are non-families. 30.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.98.
In the township the population is spread out with 22.4% under the age of 18, 9.1% from 18 to 24, 30.9% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 92.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.5 males.
The median income for a household in the township is $50,067, and the median income for a family is $61,497. Males have a median income of $48,818 versus $29,847 for females. The per capita income for the township is $25,758. 5.8% of the population and 4.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.4% of those under the age of 18 and 6.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
